Loft Insulation

Loft Insulation

In an uninsulated home a quarter of your heat is lost through the roof. Insulating your loft is a simple and effective way to reduce your heating bills and it is one of the simpler jobs to do it yourself.

Heat will always flow from a warm area to a cold one. The colder it is outside, the faster heat from your home will escape into the surrounding air. Insulation makes it much more difficult for heat to pass up through your roof by providing a layer of material which has lots of air pockets in it. These pockets trap heat, cutting what is known as the U value of the loft.

A loft can be insulated with loft insulation blankets, often referred to as `quilts’although it needs to be done to a high standard to avoid unnecessary wastage.

Another type of loft insulation, blown insulation, must be installed by a professional. An installer will typically take just a few hours and may use specialist equipment which blows loose, fire-retardant insulation material into the loft.
